Visitors entering Hawkes Bay from the middle and upper North Island pass through the beautiful Esk Valley on State Highway 50 before arriving at the coastal city and port of Napier about 10 minutes further on. The Esk Valley is renowned and sought after destination by tourists and travellers for its picturesque rural landscape and for the vineyards and wineries through the valley. Another increasingly well known attraction is New Zealand’s largest and possibly most successful lavender farm; a spectacular sight in full bloom for the many visiting tourists.

On behalf of the retiring owners we are privileged to offer sale within the Esk valley as a going concern Whitebay Lavender Farm. Whitebay is New Zealand’s largest and busiest lavender farm with over 20,000 established plants and producing on site each year from 150 to 300 litres of distilled lavender oil concentrate. An important and unique feature of the lavender operation at Whitebay (elsewhere is a highly labour intensive operation) is the mechanisation of the harvesting operation using plant developed and adapted by our innovative vendors, together with on site lavender distilling (itself an ongoing tourist attraction) and a sophisticated retail operation adding substantial value to lavender extracted.

Capitalising on its prominent position at the head of the Esk Valley the main visitor and tourist entry point to Hawkes Bay (and at least one hours drive from the last significant stop-over at Taupo) from the middle and upper North Island, our vendors have developed a popular café and day restaurant to service this passing trade. This business has been designed to compliment the lavender operation, a major visitor attraction in its own right. The cafe features a modern state-of-the art kitchen servicing a 100m² marquee for weather proof dinning offering a range of popular food but including dishes based lavender cuisine. In addition a strong retail trade has been developed based from an adjacent imported Dutch style red barn which houses the distillery and retail shop. The shop enjoys an excellent trade based on the vendors well developed “Whitebay world of lavender” theme with an extensive retail product range including cosmetics, soaps and perfumes.

Another potential significant income source is the large modern commercial kennel complex which was developed approximately 10 years earlier but which the owners have retired for personal reasons. This complex covers approximately 1600 m² with 24 individual pens inside a fully covered area which features a central race and effluent disposal system and 8 outside grassed exercise pens with access races, shade trees and high galvanised pipe and chain mesh fencing. This modern infrastructure would be highly suitable for the re establishment of commercial kennels with no further significant capital expenditure required. Operating commercial kennels at Whitebay has been in the past and potentially remains a very viable option, not only because of the existing infrastructure, but also because the location is a convenient and popular drop off and collection point for dog owners leaving and returning to Hawkes Bay.

The owner’s residence is a late 1950’s or early 1060’s bungalow with weatherboard cladding, wood joinery and iron roof. In recent years it has been substantially modernised and renovated, including a spacious, modern kitchen with central Island, gas stove and hobs and a modern wood chip heater with wet back for hot water heating.

Our vendors would be pleased to assist new owners to become familiar with all aspects of the business and especially the lavender farm operation, including the harvest and distillery operation.

This is a business with considerable potential for expansion. The immediate option with considerable profit potential is development of further facilities to cater for wedding functions together with a liquor licence. It is understood that there is a significant demand for this facility from a proportion of the many summer marriages conducted at neighbouring historic and picturesque Eskdale church.
